Types of Headache: Causes, Symptoms and, Treatment

Headaches are common among all of us. In India, one in every six people suffers from headaches which are not always expected. At the same time, some report it to be a typical kind of headache that quickly goes off with some painkillers; on the other hand, some groups of people report it to be throbbing pain and severe.

 

And from this, we come to the conclusion that headaches of different types which has their causes and symptoms. Some types of headaches can also indicate an underlying condition if didn't care.

 

Hence it is necessary to differentiate among them to prevent further health problems. Therefore in this article, I have come here with 3 types of headaches that are common in almost everyone.

What are the three different types of headaches?

The headaches have been classified into three basic types based on the intensity, symptoms, and causes. Let's see;

  • Tension Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Cluster Headaches

These are the three basic types of headaches commonly found in most people. Now let's have a detailed explanation of each.

 

Tension Headaches:

Tension Headaches are the most common types of headaches found among most people. Stress is the primary role player in this type of headache. These headaches are chronic and occur once every one or two days. 


Tension headaches are easy to cure if they occasionally occur with some usual pain relievers. But if it's frequently happening, you may need to visit your doctor and get some prescriptions. 

 

Common Symptoms: 

Some common symptoms of tension headaches include; 
Pain in the back of the head/neck
Mild to moderate headache
It hurts on both sides of the head

 

Treatment: 

Treatment for this kind of headache includes;
Relaxation activities like yoga and meditation.
Proper sleep schedule
Pain relievers
Tricyclic anti-depressant medications


Migraines:

 Migraines are another common type of headache, which are also common in most people. Migraines are headaches with a throbbing pain in the head accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. It is a neurological disease that leaves a sharp, throbbing sensational pain in your head. It is recurring in nature and hits you episode-wise. 

Migraines hit people differently. Some suffer from prodrome, aura, attack, and post-drome. Not everyone who is suffering from a migraine goes through all these stages. 

 

Common Symptoms:

Some common symptoms of migraines include; 
Nausea and Vomiting
Sensitivity to light
Pain in the eyes, neck or dizziness, nasal congestion, and distorted vision.

Treatment:

Treatment for Migraines includes;
Relax in a dark room as the light and sound can increase the migraine difficulties.
A hot and cold compress can also work for some types of migraines.
A small amount of caffeine is also good at times for your migraines, but it works only occasionally. 


Cluster Headaches:

 Cluster Headaches are the type of headaches that affect the least number of people. It is infrequent when compared to other types of headaches. Cluster headaches are the type of headaches that occur and hit in a group and last for 1-3 hours on average. It usually occurs on one side of your eye.

Certain things that can trigger cluster headaches are cigarette smoke, alcohol, strong smells, changes to a high altitude, exertion, attitude, heat, cocaine, and foods that contain nitrates. 

 

Common Symptoms: 

Some common symptoms of cluster headaches include;
One-sided pain in the head.
Restlessness and excessive tearing along with red eyes. 
Face or head swelling on that particular side.

 

Treatment:

Treatment for cluster headaches includes; 
Deep breathing works better for cluster headaches.
Oxygen therapy is also a treatment.

Ayurveda indeed has several therapies to cure your throbbing and common headaches, which can provide you with better results; Some of them include;

It includes inhaling sandalwood's vapors and cardamom powder, invigorating the senses, and more. It is beneficial for your body in several ways.
